Many medical professionals misdiagnose FOP due to the lack of knowledge about this disease. Patients can undergo unnecessary procedures which can cause a great deal of pain and suffering for FOP patients. The rate of misdiagnosis can be as high as 90%. Wrong procedures done are biopsies, osteotomies and chemotherapy.
Misdiagnosis made, is:
i. Cancer and Soft Tissue Sarcoma
Tumor-like lumps can be associated with cancer and FOP can be misdiagnosed as cancer. Soft tissue sarcoma is a type of cancer that attacks the soft tissue of the body. ii. Myositis ossificans traumatica (MOT)
