In Mississippi today, we are one of the highest poverty state in the United States. Many people are unemployment, underemployed and working jobs they are not satisfied with. Because of so much poverty, many children go to bed hungry every night. Even the schools can hardly afford food. Sometimes, school breakfast and lunch is the only meals students get for that day. There are people who have a large family to take care of and they will love to have the job others are complaining about. There are people and events that have left their marks in Mississippi history. The past economic activities of the state is quite different from the present economic activities. Now going back into the 1950’s and 1960’s Medger Evers made a big impact on Jackson, MS. He was also in the NAACP. Evers was gunned down right in front of his house coming from a long day at work. In 1955 there was a young teenager by the name of Emmitt Till, who was came down from Chicago, IL to visit his uncle in Money, MS. Till was beaten, killed and thrown into a river for allegedly whistling at a white married women. After Till’s mother found out, she wanted to have an open casket funeral to show the world how mean and rude the white population can be. A grand jury indicted Roy Bryant and J.W. Milam in the murder of Emmett Till on September 6, 1955. Their trial began on September 19,1955 in the Tallahatchie County courthouse in Sumner. Bryant and Milam were acquitted after 67 minutes of jury deliberation. The case attracted national attention. This case scared people image of Mississippi and even today, visitors fell the state is the same as it was in 1955. Even though Mississippi is consider by many as the most segregated state in the Union, it has made tremendous progress in the areas of, racial equality, diversity in schools and colleges, economic development, political and social
