Although many compromises were in place, not every state agreed to these laws. One particular example is Kansas and Nebraska. Under the Missouri Compromise, these states were designated to free states (Doc. 3). However, both states had stirred up large protests as to whether they should be free or slave states. Kansas especially had disputes, to the point of such violence that earned the name “Bleeding Kansas” (Doc. 4). Previously, the topic of slavery was more popular in states on the eastern coast, but were reenergized by the Kansas-Nebraska Act (Doc. 4).
