The Missouri plan which is also referred to as the non-partisan court plan is a model used in the selection of judges. The Missouri Plan was proposed by the people of Missouri State, and it was later adopted as a method for the selection of judges (Kang & Shepherd, 2011). The Missouri Plan was adopted as a method of selection with the least political influence. The plan consists of three steps which include application, nomination, appointment, and then an election is conducted.
The process starts with the creation of a nomination committee that screens the applicants and nominates the qualified candidates for the position of the judge. The nominated candidates are then submitted to the appointing authority which is always the governor. The governor then appoints the candidate with the best qualifications among the nominated candidates to serve as a judge on probation (Kang & Shepherd, 2011). After the probation period, the judge is then subjected to a popular election basing his candidacy on the merits of the previous judges.

The terms of the judges vary, but they are usually required to go for a reelection after the end of their terms. The judges usually run for their various positions either as Democrats or Republicans where they are usually selected based on the popularity of the party or based on their campaign strategies. In this kind of selection where the judges are elected based on the political parties, is important for the judge to run with the party that is popular at that time (Kang & Shepherd, 2011). Therefore, it is clear that the election of a judge in Texas would depend on his or her political and social connection and does not take into account the merits or his competence as a judge.
