Piracy has been a problem throughout history. Its roots go back 2000 years ago when pirates ruled over the Mediterranean Sea. A well known group of pirates were the Vikings who used rivers to attack settlements. The Vikings were found in many parts of Europe, North Africa, and even coastal areas of North America. Other famous pirates include those during the colonial age of America. These pirates were ruthless marauders of the sea, who attacked ships they came across so they can steal their goods. Although the number of pirates has decreased since the reign of early pirates, piracy can still be found in some parts of the world to this day.
Piracy has become a common occurrence in the African country of Somalia. Ever since the fall of Somalia’s government in 1991, pirates have spawned dramatically on the coasts of Somalia. With no one to guard the coastline, piracy became a frequent problem in Somalia. By 2008, the Somali pirates have collected 150 million dollars and seized 2 ships in the process.

Moore was researching Somali pirates when he was captured in January of 2012.
