Michael Rogers English Language Arts, Riverfront Middle School The Mongol Empire Leanne Chamberlin 06/07/2024 INTRODUCTION The Mongol Empire was the second largest empire in history, and the largest contiguous empire in history. It was based in Asia, specifically in Mongolia and was formed by Genghis Khan. The empire had 5 Great Khans throughout its history and lasted 162 years between the years of 1206 and 1368. During these years, the Mongols expanded all the way from Mongolia, into China, Central Asia, Russia, the Middle East, and even Europe. The Mongols used primarily crossbowmen on horseback to invade these regions. Throughout these conquests the Mongols killed millions of people, and were known to be ruthless.

In reality, the empire was made up of mostly Chinese, Persians, Russians, and Central Asians. The Mongols were okay with this though, and they were overall very accepting of other cultures. The government of the empire was called a ‘meritocracy’, this is a government where governmental positions were given to those who had proven skills or merits, but loyalty also played a very large part in the government. The leader of the empire was known as a Great Khan, and Khans were leaders of specific regions of the empire. When a Great Khan dies, one of the Khans will be selected to be the new Great Khan. Generally this process took quite a long time, this was because the death of a Great Khan was very serious. This is evident when you look at the burial of Genghis Khan. When Genghis Khan died, 2,000 slaves were forced to help bury the body and they were all monitored by guards. When the slaves finished, the guards killed all the slaves, then all of the guards committed suicide, this was in order to make it so that nobody knew where Genghis was buried.
