Purpose Statement: In this speech, I will describe the process and some the basic mechanics of flying to the Moon in a spacecraft.
Attention-getter: When I was a child, I was under the impression that in order to reach orbit around earth you had to simply go high enough to start revolving around the earth. Additionally, I thought flying to the Moon or any other planet was as simple as pointing your spaceship in the correct direction and firing your rocket for long enough and eventually you would end up where you were going.
Thesis Statement: In order to reach a celestial body such as the Moon you need to escape the atmosphere, achieve orbit, transfer orbits to the sphere of influence of choice, perform a deorbit burn, and safely …show more content…
A suicide burn is the most efficient method to land on the surface of any object. A suicide is a when your fire your engine at the last possible second at full thrust to bring the spaceships velocity down to a safe landing speed. This is usually around 2-5m/s depending on the spaceship.
Evidence: The suicide burn is given the name due to the risk of slamming into the surface if you miscalculate the proper suicide burn height. So these descents are almost always controlled by computer guidance systems. At the end of the suicide burn you should be roughly 50-100 meters above the surface at a velocity of around 10m/s
Supporting Point:The final step in landing on the Moon is bring down and maintaining a velocity of 2-5m/s until you touch down. This step is fairly simple but very important. Landing is a very precarious situation can cause mission failures if not performed correctly.
Evidence: Spaceships are equipped with radar altimeters that will allow them see exactly where the ground is so that computer can shut off the engines seconds before landing. In addition, very powerful reaction control systems keep the spacecraft correctly oriented for landing.

Transition: Now that we have landed, let’s go over the steps
