The government should not expresses endorsement for a religious doctrine because it would treat non-adherents of that doctrine as less than equal, because it hinders non-adherents ability to use their moral conscience to participate in public reasoning. In addition, religious endorsement creates an insider/outsider problem, which is a reasonable fear within non-adherents that they are no longer an insider in their nation because of a disparity in their national and patriotic identity. Lastly, while it is believe that religion is innately good, it should not be endorsed by the government because it enforces the insider/outsider problem within citizen’s moral conscience.
To begin with, a moral conscience is the inner part of a person’s body that helps the person make the necessary decision about what they believe is right or wrong in their life. A moral conscience is one of the guiding force in a person’s religious identity. Based on a person’s conscience it allows them to make the decision on what religion they identify with. The moral conscience is also an important part in the public reasoning process. This is because there moral conscience makes the decision that they cannot connect with the religious norm that is being endorsed by the government. They now feel like an outsider within their country because their religious preference no longer align with the preference the government has established. This in return, makes the non-adherent feel as if they are less of a citizen because they can longer properly connect with the laws and tradition the government is establishing with the religious
