With the advancement of technology, it has become easier for certain individuals to be exposed to different cultures that they may have not known much about. For example, Mormons have received some negative attention due to the Warren Jeffs scandal, the Broadway musical The Book of Mormon, or the popular reality show on TLC, Sister Wives. Some of these examples show the practice of polygamous marriages, and the abusive side that can stem from these relationships. Although these portray certain examples of real life Mormons, this isn’t the case for all. Many Mormons don’t practice, let alone believe in having polygamous marriages; however, communities that actively choose to practice polygamy are often ridiculed, or looked down upon. They hardly ever pay any attention to healthy, thriving polygamous families. Women in the community of Centennial Park, show that it is possible to be in a polygamous marriage and have power. This power stems from the women’s ability to choose their own husband. They are not forced into any marriage by family members, church members, or friends. Although these individuals might try and influence a particular woman’s about who she should choose, ultimately they have no part in the process. As stated before, the process is incredibly intimate, and is between God and the individual who is praying to receive inspiration from God. These women have the ability to choose when to be married as well. So, not only do they personally pick their husband, but they determine when the timing is right for them to actually wed. This means that a woman is never forced into marrying when she is not of age, doesn’t feel comfortable with the individual, doesn’t like the individual, feels the man has too many wives, or feels rushed into it. The women living in this community are not oppressed, they have complete control, and power over their decision to
