Multiple Sclerosis
Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disorder with demylination occurring within the central nervous system. The central nervous system is made up of nerves that act as the body's messenger system. Each nerve is covered by a fatty substance called myelin, which insulates the nerves. The myelin helps in the transmission of nerve impulses between the brain and other parts of the body. MS is a debilitating disease characterized by myelin loss, axonal pathology, and progressive neurologic dysfunction. Genetic, epidemiologic, and pathologic studies support the hypothesis that the neurologic manifestations of the disease arise from immune-mediated demyelination. This in turn impairs neuronal transmission and results in axonal degeneration. 17

Epidemiologists have identified few factors which might lead to MS. These factors include gender, genetics, age, geography and ethnic background.
Types of MS
Four disease courses have been identified in MS. They are:
• Relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS)
This is the most common type; approximately 85% of people with MS are initially diagnosed with RRMS. It is characterized by clearly defined attacks of worsening of neurologic function. These attacks or relapses are followed by partial or complete recovery periods which are called as remissions. During remission, the symptoms either partially improve or completely improve and there is no apparent progression of the disease.

• Primary-progressive MS (PPMS)
PPMS is characterized by steadily worsening of neurologic function from the beginning. Over time, the rate of progression may vary with temporary improvements; there are no distinct relapses or remissions. About 10% of MS patients are diagnosed with PPMS.

• Secondary-progressive MS
