These regions determine the experienced symptoms and their severity. Along with the affected region, the extent of demyelination and remyelination and the adequacy of subsequent restored synaptic transmission both contribute to the symptoms (Williams & Wilkins, 2013). MS is characterized by periods of exacerbations and remissions, resulting in major disabilities. Four patterns of these periods have been sorted out into: 1) Relapsing –remitting: the commonest type where exacerbation is followed by remission, 2) Primary-progressive, where only worsen of symptoms occur, 3) Secondary-progressive, which starts with relapsing-remitting and gets worse, and finally 4) Progressive-relapsing; a rare pattern where relapsing is steadily worsening. MS symptoms range from numbness to paralysis in severe cases. Common symptoms include: visual disturbances, mental changes, limb weakness, loss of sensation, depression, paranoia, muscle spasm, and bladder and bowel dysfunction.
