Mumps is a disease caused by the mumps virus which is in the paramyxoviridae family. It is spread by respiratory droplets in the air. It is most common in children and is extremely contagious, so much so, anyone near a person with mumps is at risk as well. This disease enters the body and first infects the epithelial cells of the nasopharynx(nasal passage linked to throat) where it begins replicating and causing local damage to the tissue.(“Mumps - symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, pathology.”) The well known sign of the disease, according to Kidshealth.org is swelling and pain in the parotid gland (Salivary gland); a child with mumps will often look like a chipmunk. Science has come up with a vaccine that is used to prevent Mumps. This …show more content…
If someone were to experience this side effect the person should not be alarmed because this is normal and will cease once the body builds immunity. The virus used to create this immunization is Urabe.(Information." EBSCOHost, EBSCO Publishing) This strand consists of a mixture of mumps viruses that are not similar at a single codon of the hemagglutinin-neuraminidase (HN) gene.( Who.int, World Health Organization) The gene or segment of nucleotides that specifically codes for the Urabe strain (F gene) was isolated from chick fibroblasts, organisms that contain the mumps virus, this result shows that the mumps virus can adapt easily and replicate itself with small changes to increase likelihood of infection. (Pubmed.gov. 9 Nov. 1991;Stanford.edu. ) What is also known is that the immune system triggers a series of responses which aid the body in removing foreign microbes that carry disease. Once the body attacks these germs inside, it begins to record information about them creating an image of how it looks and how to fight against this group. (Dhanasarnsombut, Kelwalin. "How Do Vaccines Work?") The vaccine was developed by Maurice Hillman in …show more content…
Vaccines can help prevent the disease from affecting the human population, but if one does not get vaccinated than the risk of having it is even greater.(“Mumps - Symptoms, Diagnosis, Treatment, Pathology.” YouTube) Animal testing for the mumps vaccine is a method scientists have used for several years, it aids in process of making sure it is effective. One negative point is that there is still a 10% chance of getting the disease but If one distances oneself from people who are positive for the disease it is not as likely to happen(Information." EBSCOHost, EBSCO Publishing). The proven fact about the vaccine being 90% effective is due to the research done behind this prevention treatment. Knowing that gives people more of a reason to get vaccinated along with their children. Having this disease would be catastrophic for anyone because while it is in your nasopharynx it damages the tissue while also causing Viremia (Virus in the blood) and reach various organs and tissues within the body. Other dangerous occurrences are Meningitis (lining of the brain) and Encephalitis(infection of brain tissue). (“Mumps - symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, pathology.” YouTube). Some limitations that come with having the vaccine are not being able to cure mumps while the person has it and the 10% chance that it will be ineffective. In most cases it is effective and it’s something people do not worry
