This month I was assigned to write a paper for my Foundations of Physical therapy class. This included participating in a professional meeting and applying the use of the professional socialization DEAL model for clinical refection. On a Sunday afternoon at a local coffee shop, I began this assignment. After reading my notes from the presentation, I read through the handout to ensure proper objective description, thorough examination from academic and civic standpoints, examination from a personal standpoint, and clear articulation of what I took away from this assignment.
The presentation I attended was an MPTA event at Oakland University. The beginning of the presentation included a local board member who introduced other state level APTA/MPTA committee members. This was followed by a brief dialogue that touched on recent legislative changes. The main part of the professional meeting was a lecture given by Dr. Sujay Galen. It was based on a research study that involved the improvement of selective muscle recruitment with the use of the Nu-step machine on healthy vs. stroke patients. The measures of this study included seat position, stepping rate, resistance, and visual feedback. The study presented support towards a responsive change in muscle recruitment involving the increase of stepping rates and muscle recruitment under certain conditions

It was exciting to feel included in an organization that is so important to the field of Physical therapy, especially when the progressive changes involving legislation were included. It solidified the importance of how attending and meeting other members could impact patients receiving therapy. After Dr. gallon’s presentation, I felt proud to attend a school with faculty who have high regard and involvement in research. It was important for me to act as an active student member by having good interpersonal skills with meaningful interactions with other student
