Basketball is a dynamic sport where many muscles are activated and used throughout your body to help you perform multi-joint movements. Basketball contributes to stamina, endurance and muscular strength as your muscles are constantly contracting as well as performing explosive movements. While playing basketball you use mostly all the muscles throughout your body, such as; your quads are used when running and jumping as well as the hamstrings, which coordinate with your gluteus maximums to help hyperextend your hips during running and jumping activities. The calf muscles also play a big role when playing basketball. A group known as the triceps surae, which consist of the soleus and gastrocnemius, contribute to the movements of your ankle. As you are constantly running and jumping your calf muscles are contracting and helping you maintain balance and stabilization throughout the game. As far as upper body muscles you are using; muscles that are involved with your shoulder joint, shoulder blades, elbows and wrist. When dribbling the ball you are using your triceps, biceps, deltoids and forearm muscles. Also when shooting the ball you use your deltoids and other back muscles such as your trapezius.
