Performance Paper The musical performance that I attended was a concert by Oliver Heldens at Echostage at Washington D.C. This experience was truly a good memory and an experience to enjoy Electronic Dance music. Oliver Heldens is a Dutch electronic music producer from Rotterdam in Netherlands. Despite of his young age of 21, Heldens was able to produce incredible artworks that were greatly appreciated by many famous professional DJs and electronic music producers like, Tiesto, Diplo, and etc. His original ideas and new melodies were the source of his creation of EDM (Electronic Dance Music). According to St. Johns Graham the most popular form of EDMC (Electronic Dance Music Culture) is clubbing which represents a ‘freedom from’. The type of EDM performances is considered as presentational Performance, which is when one group of people prepares and provides music for another group. In this case Producers create the sounds and DJs present them in a live context. This type of music is created and presented for non-stop dancing so it is usually held in nigh clubs, rave, dance party, and etc. It has distinct characteristic as well, such as having repetitive beats (133bpm), and the sound mediates the movement and vice versa. Surprisingly, within the Genre of EDM, there are many more different types of EDM present. For example, “House” is one of the most prevalent genres of EDM, which has signature repetitive 4/4 beats the hi-hat cymbals, and synthesized bass lines. Madonna and Kanye West are known to have incorporated House music. Moreover, there is “Dub” which found inspiration in Reggae music, with a tempo of 138 to 142 bpm dubstep rhythms incorporates tuplets1 and are often syncopated. “Skrillex” is a famous artist known for producing dub music (Negi). Unlike other countries, Netherlands has culture, law, and societies that are more open towards dancing, partying, and drugs. Ter Bogt said that “House” is the main youth subculture of the 1980s and 1990s in the Netherlands. For the members of this youth culture scene, house is a combination of going to parties and dancing all night while being high on MDMA, a drug better known as XTC/Ecstasy. This proves that Netherlands, contrasting to United States where EDM became a hit few years ago, have had EDM as one of their top genres of music. So comparatively old history and continuous hit of EDM in Netherlands allowed more people living in Netherlands to gradually experience and feel more open towards electronic music and recreational drugs as well. Regarding this trend, it is not a surprise to know how Netherlands in 21st century has formed. Even some DJs, including Heldens, were called to clubs to perform at the age of 13 with guardians to accompany with him. They have been living in a society where EDM, dance clubs, and rave are not classified as dangerous, or only for adults’ recreation, but it is recognized as one of any other recreational activities or music.
