We have had to do some routine middle school activities such as our “Spelling Bee” where Will missed 17 of the 25 words. After scoring a recent reading comprehension paper, he missed 3 out of 15 on a comprehension passage. Also during the same week (Halloween), my perfectionist totally shocked me; he made a 68 on his vocabulary homework. From day one, the requirements have been that all the words must be spelled correctly because they are included in the homework packet. His errors were totally careless. He misspelled 5 words in the section relating to context clues and 3 questions from the article relating to structure and author’s purpose. These mistakes could have been explained except he had the materials he needed to support the correct answers in his vocabulary notebook. Seeing these grades puzzled me so I went to the cumulative files and pulled his AIG ELA testing scores. I needed to know how had he been admitted into the AIG program? When he took the CogAT in third grade, he made a 99 Subtest Q score that kicks him straight into math AIG. His ELA score was only 75, Subtest NV was 65, and his composite was 91. Math scores had gotten him into the program. He loves math since it comes naturally to him. As his ELA teacher, I need to push him to pay more attention to the requirements of his assignments.
