My core values that I feel could inhibit the effectiveness with certain clients could be that I am pro-life. I do not feel that counseling someone of a different religion, race, sexual preference, or orientation would inhibit my effectiveness. I may not be as experienced dealing with their situations as another social worker. In relation to termination of pregnancy, I feel my values may inhibit my effectiveness with the clients I intend to aid. One of the primary goals as a counselor/social worker is to show dignity and promote the welfare of the client. I believe to lessen the chances of imposing ones values on a client would need to begin by being aware of the values and beliefs that are not consistent with the goals one is trying to achieve with the client. As for myself if I had a client that chooses to abort her child, I am aware that my value system does not correlate with one another. Becoming aware that I am not comfortable within these circumstances I can avoid placing my opinions on the client. If I consult with another social worker to better assist the client. A social worker must remember the client-centered approach. This dictates that one must show empathy. I believe to show empathy one must truly understand and listen to the client and put oneself in their place. As I fully am aware that termination of pregnancy, may be what the client feels as her best option. The social worker must listen to the client and become aware of her situation with family, financial situation, and her ability to care for the child. It is not my place to reprimand her or change her mind, but rather just to promote the welfare of the client and to show them
