Ferrara spends most of the poem talking about his last Duchess that was painted on the wall by Frà Pandolf. The Duke does not start off with saying much about the painting, except that she looks very lifelike. When the Duchess gets joyous about something, she smiles and starts to blush, which leads to the Duke describing her cheeks as a “spot of joy”.
