I do not want to only focus on relationship, but the population I am interested in working with will require some rapport before techniques yield results. I will want to have every technique in my arsenal, because I want to react smoothly to the ebbs and flows I may encounter in sessions. The techniques that align most with my personal style and personality are the ones I work to master. Open questioning, reflection of meaning, encouraging and confrontation are the four techniques I want to feel comfortable executing. Open questioning is a skill I need to perfect, but this will align with my personal style because I want the client to feel as though I am engaged and interested in what they are telling me. Questions are not empathic, but an open question can lead a client to a new realization and strengthen their trust in me. Reflection of meaning allows a client to uncover “a deeper awareness of the possibilities of life” (Ivey, Ivey, Zalaquett, 2014). Reflection keeps the focus and power with the client. As we work to restory, the client is actively involved in the process. Encouragement is my favorite skill. These are simple ways to embolden the client to continue and to reassure them that they are being heard and that what they are saying is important. My views on maladjustment will be case by case because therapy is client based and every client will be unique; I will adjust accordingly. My beliefs may act as guiding point for me, but I will first want to know what the client wants. I will be cautious to integrate my own beliefs in order to keep my personal influence to a minimum. If our beliefs align, I will frugally incorporate mine, but keep the focus on the client. The ability to connect with each client means that I will have to adjust my relationship building skills every time. My own orientation towards life will be present in all sessions. My main orientation toward life is thinking positive and being happy. It is a work in progress for me, but fostering an atmosphere that embodies these ideals, will keep it at the forefront of my mind and the client’s
