Narcissistic Mothers and the Effect on Their Children When you are born the very first person you see is in this life is your mother. The person who you will come to depend on for everything for the first couple of years, or like some children of narcissistic children for a lifetime. Mother’s normal strive to put their children’s needs above their own personal needs. Normal mothers should push their children to do better than they did in their life. Narcissistic mothers are not like this, they put their own needs before that of their children. These children are pones in her own twisted game of chess, using favoritism, terror and other means of manipulations. The effects of narcissistic mothers can be seen in many aspects of their children lives from childhood even into adulthood.

The majority of these women end up with NPD because when they are children they experience a sense of excessive pampering in their formative years or excessive criticism. (Mayo Clinic 2014). Although a diagnosis of NPD is quite rare, this mental disorder does affect men more then it affects women. Many researchers don’t believe there is a biological connect to this particular disorder, many people believe that external environmental on the many and only leading causes of NPD.
This children who have been over criticized will begin to hide under a mask, to cover up the fact that they have a lower sense of self-esteem. Many women who have NPD have been abused by their own parents, either through sexual, mental or physical abuse. (Mayo Clinic 2014) This is why many of these mothers suffer from some form of addiction or another. Being a child of a narcissistic mother increases your chances of becoming one dramatically, not because this is something that can be inherited through your genes, but because you think the behavior is normal.
