Abstract
Narcissistic Personality is a complex disorder in which individuals have a heightened sense of self-worth and display tendencies of grandiosity. Narcissistic people portray a variety of behaviors relating to personal needs of oneself while neglecting others needs. Narcissism leads to poor professional and romantic relationships as well. The cause of this disorder is not known; however, insight is provided as to reasons why an individual may develop the disorder. Genetics are thought to have a significant role in the development of narcissism as well as environmental factors (Dingfelder, 2011). Inability for parental empathy during a child's development appears to play a major role in narcissism. Lack of parental empathy leads to attachment difficulties harboring an individual who is unable to regulate their emotions, who avoids attachments, and seeks attention (Dimaggio, M.D., 2012). Children raised in an environment where success and statues are the only importance and grandiose behaviors are the only behaviors acknowledged typically grow to become narcissistic individuals as well (Dimaggio, M.D., 2012). They must desire to receive treatment and seek out the most qualified professionals for NPD. Often, an individual with narcissism will avoid treatment due to the negativity it portrays to their idea of self-image (Dingfelder, 2011). Clinical trials have not been conducted to conclude the optimal treatment for NPD; therefore, clinicians use treatment options that have worked well in the past. Treatments include talk therapy where the narcissistic individual is placed among others with a similar diagnosis to reduce their narcissism and enhance their ability to care for others (Dingfelder, 2011). Other types of therapy used with Narcissistic Personality Disorder are metacognitive interpersonal therapy, cognitive analytical therapy, schema-focused therapy, and relational psychoanalysis (Dingfelder, 2011).
