In simple terms the mental health category is a more intense form of the personality trait. Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD), is where the trait has started to affect someone’s regular routine. NPD is also found to show an increased lack of empathy and intimacy with other people, then those with just a narcissistic personality. Narcissism is a trait each of us exhibits to a greater or lesser degree. In the words of psychologist Craig Malkin "It is the capacity to see ourselves and others through rose-coloured glasses," a lecturer at Harvard Medical School and the author of Rethinking Narcissism. Kali Trzensniewki states "There are personality traits we come into the world with," a social-development psychologist. Like any personality trait the environment they grow up in either encourages or discourages this behaviour. A study on the topic of narcissism found troublesome toddlers were more likely to became narcissistic adults then their well-behaved peers. Therefore, both nature and nurture have a role in determining how one would behave and act towards others and the environment around them. In terms of personality, it is common to think that narcissists are self-involved and cocky, this shouldn’t be compared to self-esteem though. Self-esteem is more self-belief then being boastful about one’s abilities. The nurture of self-esteem is dependent on how parents show their kids they can do it if they try their best rather then saying the kid is already great at that activity. This style of parenting by making kids compete in life is a newer style but is it due to a competitive society or just narcissistic parents creating narcissistic
