National Anthem Kneeling

Throughout the United States, Americans have been conflicted over the recent kneelings during the national anthem. Players and coaches claim that they’re kneeling to protest against the government to promote awareness and to fix all the problems we struggle within the government and the people. However, by kneeling, these players and coaches are only making matters worse and aren’t actually doing anything to make them better. While, some people agree with the kneeling of the national anthem, many believe that not only is it causing more chaos in our country, but that it is completely disrespectful to those whom are fighting for our flag and our freedom overseas. The NFL commissioner, Roger Goodell, agrees with the people that is is important to respect our flag. “Like many of our fans, we believe that everyone should stand for the national anthem. It is an important moment in our game. We want to honor our flag and our country, and our fans expect that of us”(Goodell). To go along with respect, a political cartoon (8) shows a veteran in a wheelchair next to a NFL player. The veteran says, “Speaking of taking a knee, enemies of our flag took mine.” They’re people fighting for their lives to protect us while NFL players getting paid millions of dollars to play the game they love. However, Samuel Chi states, “This isn’t about the first amendment. While congress shall make no law infringing on your freedom of expression, your employer damn well can impose what kind of conduct it expects when you’re on company gear.” If the players wanted to make an actual change, they would speak out on how they actually feel, rather than just taking a kneel. I believe these famous players could put there money to use by donating to programs or legitimate protests in the United
