During the first meeting of the year, I gave a speech about the value of sharing art within our community as a means to foster intrinsic motivation in the new members. That same meeting, I concentrated on memorizing each member’s name in order to create a sense of acceptance. By forming small committees throughout the year, I helped erase the sense of hierarchy that could have prevented underclassmen and new members from sharing their working ideas. Even my simple suggestion for forming Wechat groups has enabled members to speak up with the encouragement of a casual atmosphere. The results of creating an environment where ideas are shared confidently and freely has enhanced the brainstorming process for projects and the productivity of our society.
Not losing sight of my experience as a freshman member, I made sure I was the kind of leader who actively reaches out to help members get involved. History is often used as a tool to examine trends and apply them to the present and future. The value in learning history for me, however, is the lessons it has taught me on how to approach other disciplines from a unique perspective and pushed me to explore my own values. Studying history has allowed me to create a more nuanced understanding of other academic subjects that I plan to study in college.
