Walking into the National Art Honor Society as a freshman, I felt intimidated and wondered if the officers would notice my presence. However, my ambition did not let intimidation stop me from proposing my own art installation project. After my friend and I presented our idea to the board, I was pleasantly surprised they accepted it. A year later, the numerous sculptures I sketched out were successfully implemented into our school’s library, and I experienced first hand that age or status in a new community should not hold a person back from participation or achievement. I decided then that if I became an officer, I would use my leadership role to create a nourishing environment that maintained this feeling of acceptance in the society. My …show more content…
During the first meeting of the year, I gave a speech about the value of sharing art within our community as a means to foster intrinsic motivation in the new members. That same meeting, I concentrated on memorizing each member’s name in order to create a sense of acceptance. By forming small committees throughout the year, I helped erase the sense of hierarchy that could have prevented underclassmen and new members from sharing their working ideas. Even my simple suggestion for forming Wechat groups has enabled members to speak up with the encouragement of a casual atmosphere. The results of creating an environment where ideas are shared confidently and freely has enhanced the brainstorming process for projects and the productivity of our society.
Not losing sight of my experience as a freshman member, I made sure I was the kind of leader who actively reaches out to help members get involved. Describe your favorite academic subject and explain how it has influenced you.
History is often used as a tool to examine trends and apply them to the present and future. The value in learning history for me, however, is the lessons it has taught me on how to approach other disciplines from a unique perspective and pushed me to explore my own values. Studying history has allowed me to create a more nuanced understanding of other academic subjects that I plan to study in college. Understanding the massive influence the invention of the printing press had on European society compelled me to explore where our future is headed. This fostered my interest in digital advertising and discovering how powerful word-of-mouth can get. I am fascinated by the era I live in, and I find it valuable to take the extra minute to contextualize where I stand and am headed. The immense development in how people communicate now is why I want to understand how these fast-paced advancements came to be. I want to learn how to contribute to this necessity and advantage our society possesses and admires.
