NOW: One of The Smart Feminist Groups in the Nation
When people hear about the word feminism, they tend to get a negative feeling. Some people have a stereotype that feminism is a study devoted only for the women and excludes men from it. There are many feminist groups in the world, but not all of them spread the real ideas of the feminism. However, National Organization for Women, known as NOW, uses non-violent and effective ways to approach to women’s rights. Their most well known campaign called Love Your Body gives confidence to women and points out the problems of sexual advertisements on media. However, those beauty templates are unrealistic and almost impossible for many women to fit in. Thus, many women feel pressure to look like those unrealistically beautiful models and celebrities on the media which leads to excessive diet and stress. To eliminate this situation, the National Organization for Women speaks out through social media, in class, or in letters to the editor against negative portrayal of women. The National Organization for Women also brings up bad examples of advertisements that are offensive to women. One of the examples posted on their website is an ad from Dolce & Gabbana. In the ad, a woman with lewd clothing gets gang raped by five men. They say that feminists are not professional and that they are just the groups of women who like to complain over mere things. Wendy Stevens, an author of a feminist book Off Our Backs, criticizes the feminist that she fails “to be a woman of action…. [Stevens] remain distrustful of her and her present ability to continue on with her life as if her ‘women’s movement’ was something passed through like puberty” (Loudermilk, 43). In this book, Stevens criticizes the other feminist for taking her involvement in feminist movement too lightly. Stevens’ reaction towards a feminist in the book can represent the other non-feminists’ reaction towards the feminists. However, the National Organization for Women is a counterexample of stereotype that feminists are radical and easy minded. The organiztion acknowledges many women who were suffering from lack of knowledge in family law and judicial process. By having experts in family law to reach out to women in every state, National Organization for Women proves that feminist group can approach women’s rights professionally. There are many women who report domestic violence, injustice in family law cases, and in need of help. National Organization for Women created a group called Ad Hoc Committee composed of activists and attorneys who are devoted to help women suffering from injustice and inequality.
