Many psychologists debate the impact that nature vs nurture has on individual’s characteristics and behaviors. They believe of nature as being pre-wiring and is guided by generic; whereas nurture is the product of experience and exposure. My husband inherits many of his parents’ biological traits such as the color of his eyes, height, posture, hair and demeanor. He has most of his mother’s physical appearance and his father’s facial features. At time, I tease him about looking so much like his parents. However, nurture contributed to his physical characteristics. For instance, he has a higher energy level compare to his siblings. Like them, he inherits their parents’ appearance; but differs from them because of his exposure to a colder climate. Like his mother, he struggled his schooling when he was in primary school; however, because he was exposed to greater educational opportunities and resources he was able to learn new skills to achieve his educational goals. Many of his family members believed that he has his mother’s genes; therefore, he was expected to be a slower learner. Nurture proved them wrong as he was able to earn a higher education due to experience and exposure. Like his father, he has the ability to stay calm and collective in tough situation. He is patient, understanding and has great problem-solving skills. Most of his cognitive traits derived from his father. Unlike his parents, nurture played a bigger role in the quality of education he received. He was able to earn his college degree and have a career that he loves.
