“I’d seen enough to realize that everyone single one of use could be Nazi’s.” In this quote, William Golding is explaining that each and every person in the world has the ability to do things that no one may ever imagine doing, but when times get tough they may become a “Nazi”; meaning they will do savage things because that is the way they react to stressful situations. During William Golding’s Lord of the Flies both Jack and Ralph struggle keeping civilized and surviving and not allowing themselves to become a “Nazi” and engage in certain activities that their normal selves may not ever think of doing. As soon as the boys find one another on the island they unanimously chose Ralph as the leader as he is the one with the conch shell. This decision would begin to frustrate Jack, as Ralph makes guidelines that Jack doesn't agree with making him ultimately become a savage and decide that he will kill off anyone that decides to get in his way. Within the quote Is the reasoning behind Ralph being selected as the group's leader,”But there was a stillness about Ralph as he sat that marked him out: there was his size, and attractive appearance; and most obscurely, yet most powerfully, there was the conch.”(Golding 22). This quote shows the immediate leadership position Ralph was given once on the Island. It also shows the trust that the littluns and the rest of the boys have in Ralph by their selection of making him their leader. Ralph would soon take advantage of this decision by applying guidelines, including the responsibilities of both Jack and the rest of the choir boys, as they are in charge of hunting and providing them with food as well as making sure that the signal fire is smoking when it is needed to be.
