Instructional Problem
The team of advisors working for the Caine College of the Arts, Utah State University advising center, generally meet with students in a one on one appointment setting that students schedule themselves. Advisors first introduction to the students, however, occurs during Student Orientation Advising and Registration (SOAR). During the day students attend workshops, with university personnel, introducing them on how to navigate a new environment and designed to motivate them as they start their higher education experience. At the end of the day a group of students, an average of 20 at a time, meet in a computer lab with advisors, to register for first their semester classes. Advisors label this event ‘down and dirty advising” or “hit and run advising” because the only goal achieved during this time is making sure students are in the right classes needed to pursue their intended major.

Due to time constraints and cognitive load issues experienced during orientation, incoming first semester students do not receive the instruction and guidance needed in order to become active partners in developing their educational plan. Students are unprepared for subsequent advising appointments creating a need for prescriptive advising to address semester plans, how to register, general education requirements, and important dates and deadlines.
