Since then, the phrase has been continued to be used. It started being used more frequently within the last few years. The concept of Net Neutrality started in October of 2009, almost a year after Barack Obama won the Presidency in his first campaign. The process took a little over five years for it to go into full effect until it was officially set by the Obama administration in February 26th, 2015. The overview of the Net Neutrality principles were that the internet must be treated equally. ISPs, internet service providers, were not allowed to favour any websites or services. They were prohibited from slowing down, speeding up, or blocking any websites regardless if they were well known or small. On December 14th, 2017, it was announced that Net Neutrality was repealed by the FCC, the Federal Communications Commission, by the Trump administration. It was repealed to a 3-2 vote. It is scheduled to officially end on April 23rd, 2018. One of the people who voted for the repeal was a man named Ajit Pai. He is a telecommunications director and the chairman of the Federal Communications Commission. He had disapproved of the principles of Net Neutrality decision since the beginning, before it was set in 2015. Pai once commented how Net Neutrality, “were based on hypothetical harms and hysterical prophecies of doom.” (Savin) He had made the proposal to restore internet freedom in November of 2017, wanting to get rid of the Net Neutrality regulations. He had spoken about his argument against Net Neutrality in a speech he gave in April of 2017. Pai believes that the more one is heavily regulated, the less one is going to get. He had also pointed out how prior to Net Neutrality, ISPs did not engage in any practices the principles had prohibited.
