In the video, “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: Net Neutrality (HBO)”, John Oliver addresses net neutrality which according to google is “the principle that Internet service providers should enable access to all content and applications regardless of the source, and without favoring or blocking particular products or websites.” Basically, net neutrality keeps the internet for being ruled by corporations. However, the F.C.C (Federal Communication Commission) is trying to pass a proposal that would end net neutrality and allow internet providers to charge fees to content providers. These internet providers such as Comcast, Verizon and more, want to control how much data they provide to content providers just like Netflix and Youtube. The need to pass the anti-net-neutrality bill comes from a business perspective, certainly, these companies want to profit more by dividing the flow of internet data to faster and slower lanes. For example, recently a big cable network HBO confirmed its plans to go online and make their content reachable to netizens, and keep up with their current competitor, Netflix. Although, some critics claim that most cable companies will still benefit from the move online, I can see why a Comcast or a DirecTV would like to monopolize the internet industry.
