A career in the medical field has always been appealing to me, especially when it comes to becoming a neurosurgeon. Essentially, a neurosurgeon is a physician who specializes in the diagnosis and surgical treatment of the brain. My future objective is to one day eventually be a licensed neurosurgeon because it will allow me to stretch my abilities while contributing to the general welfare of my patients. The educational requirements I will have to overcome will prepare me for challenging, yet exciting surgeries to come. Your bachelor’s degree is usually granted after for years of a certain study in college or university. When students are choosing their undergraduate study, I’ve found that most choose biological sciences. After requiring an undergraduate you must attend medical school and earn a Doctor of Medicine, and most importantly pass your medical licensing exam. To earn your Doctorate’s degree may take anytime from eight to 10 years. On average, most medical schools require a grade point average of at least a 3.5 to even be considered for acceptance. The final steps to becoming a neurosurgeon are completing your one year internship, which is immediately followed by a six to eight years of Neurosurgical Residency Program. The residency’s goal is to prepare the future neurosurgeons for anything they may experience in the field, from teaching clinical skills to …show more content…
The nervous system is the network of nerve cells and fibers that transmits nerve impulses between parts of the body. The most important job requirement though is performing surgeries on the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves. This may be to remove tumors, relieve pain, or to cure diseases such as obsessive compulsive disorder, Parkinson’s, epilepsy, and multiple sclerosis. Also, in order to diagnosis patients correctly neurosurgeons must decipher diagnostic tests such as MRIs, CT scans, and PET scans. I will need almost perfect hand-eye coordination and focus because one little slip may be detrimental to the most important organ in the human body. Also, the medical field requires doctors to continue their research and keep medical journals that record all his or her discoveries. They may also read others medical journals, go to medical seminars, and conferences to keep their practices up to date. The last job requirement of all will be the ability to show empathy. Doctors have to understand how his or her patient is feeling to ensure trust and to create a relationship. This is also the case when you have to break news of a death to a patient’s
