New Birth of Freedom The foundation of the United States was built on democracy, liberty, justice and equality. The birth of freedom became effective July 4, 1776 with the signing of the Declaration of Independence which declared that “All men are created equal”. However, as our young nation grew, this notion was debated between the Union North and the Confederate South in regards to slavery and equality. Abraham Lincoln, one of our most recognizable presidents, commenced the civil war in order to fight to secure a “Government of the people, by the people, and for the people.” We the American people are still influenced by what Abraham Lincoln has done. In his most famous speech the “Gettysburg Address,” Abraham Lincoln defines democracy as independence, freedom, and human equality. To start with Lincoln was concerned for viability of self-government. Lincoln’s perspective of independence and freedom lies in the declaration of independence, Lincoln believed when the white man governs himself, that is self-government; but when he governs himself and also governs another man, that is more than self- government- that is despotism. If the Negro is a man, why then my ancient faith tells me that ‘all men are created equal’ and that there can be no moral right in connection with one man’s making a slave of another. …show more content…
