Roe vs. Wade is a really big case that changed a lot in America when comes to a woman and her right to choose. Roe vs. Wade, came about in 1973 when Norma McCorvey sued the state of Texas because they had laws that said women could not get an abortion. Ms. McCorvey won in the Roe vs. Wade and it changed women’s lives everywhere. This case still has a huge effect on women. In this paper, I will discuss some of the effects the ruling has had on a woman’s right to choose as well as how the government in varies states deals with a woman’s right to choose. Before the 1960s, the United States did not have any federal law monitoring abortions. Most states had banned abortions except if the life of the mother was threaten. Some people no one should have the right to tell them what to do with their own body. A woman should have control over her own body. If she is not allowed to have an abortion, then she is deprived of the right to have control over her body. A woman should be able to decide whether or not she wants the fetus to remain inside of her. There is also the argument of ownership. A woman owns her body and the fetus is part of her body therefore she owns the fetus. If a woman owns her body and the fetus, then she has the right to have an abortion. With the Supreme Court ruling in Roe vs. Wade, many people looked at the decision as freedom of personal choice and that the 14th amendment protected a person’s choice. Over one million women have abortions each year. Studies show that women make a decision like this for many reasons. This includes rape; health concerns, and because it’s not the right time in their lives. Having a child will definitely change a person’s life; however, these reasons do not make killing another person right.
