The New England Patriots responded to societal pressure and expectation in many ways. First, a few days after the incident occurred, Bill Belichick addressed the media and said the team was cooperating with the NFL and said he has no explanation for what happened. Tom Brady also stood in front of the media a few hours later and said he did not alter the balls in any way. On January 24th, Bill Belichick had an impromptu press conference that discussed the science behind the PSI rates and also detailed the process of preparing the game balls, saying that their process of getting the balls ready raised the air pressure by one pound per square inch. He also said that the balls are not prepared in a heated room or treated in any unique way. The opening statement of the response went as follows: The conclusions of the Wells Report are, at best, incomplete, incorrect and lack context. The Report dismisses the scientific explanation for the natural loss of PSI of the Patriots footballs by inexplicably rejecting the Referee's recollection of what gauge he used in his pregame inspection. Texts acknowledged to be attempts at humor and exaggeration are nevertheless interpreted as a plot to improperly deflate footballs, even though none of them refer to any such plot. There is no evidence that Tom Brady preferred footballs that were lower than 12.5 PSI and no evidence anyone even thought that he did. All the extensive evidence which contradicts how the texts are interpreted by the investigators is simply dismissed as “not plausible.” Inconsistencies in logic and evidence are ignored.
