We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race, and the human race is filled with passion. Medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for.” While this doesn’t necessarily mention anything about tourism, it still supports the main idea of tourisms importance as an economy. Because of our passion for art and beauty we travel all over the world to witness as much of it as we can. By pursuing this passion we are contributing to the growth of tourism. Cosmopolitanism is essentially being open intellectually to outside cultures and ideas. It is society’s cosmopolitanism that makes tourism thrive. Every street is riddled with galleries all promoting Native American and Spanish art. People from all around the world come to Santa Fe to see it. My family is full of Native American potters, and every year we show our artwork at Indian Market, which is held in The Plaza in downtown Santa Fe. The amount of money made in that weekend alone off of taxation of art and money spent by tourists is a huge percentage of Santa Fe’s income for the year. All year round events like Indian Market are held in The Plaza just to attract tourists. The majority of residents in Santa Fe are some form of artists, whether it be architects, painters, sculptures, writers, etc. Santa Fe’s culture thrives off of the artists that inhabit it, just as the artists thrive off of the culture they are surrounded by. Using Santa Fe as a prime example of the importance of tourism as an economy proves that it matters. As travel methods increase tourism experiences continuous growth. This growth has some opposition by local people but that doesn’t have any hindrance on it. From an artist’s perspective there isn’t any major opposition towards tourism, because the art world thrives on it, and will continue to thrive on it.
