Through rhetorical questions and repetition, wiesel develops a significant shift in Eliezer’s faith from strong to bad. His faith before the Holocaust was powerful, he said, when his father asked him why he prayed, he said “Why do I pray? Strange question. Why did I live in the U.S.? Why did I breathe?” This rhetorical question shows his faith in God. Because the way he says that without God he wouldn’t be living here, after the Holocaust he became a different person, “for God’s sake, where is God?” He asked himself that because he was struggling about going through all of that and just didn’t have any faith and thought God was not with him.
