I plan to gather a team of all principals and selected teachers who will voice concerns about flaws within the present curriculum. A board meeting will be held with them to discuss these concerns. I will have a memo sent out to all principals to hold professional development meetings with their staff to discuss the new and effective curriculum initiative that the superintendent plans to have developed with teacher input. I will ensure that principals must mention that the new superintendent acknowledges the concerns that teachers have due to their past experience with the previous superintendent. Middle school students need to have instruction, curriculum, and assessment aligned to their psychological and physical development in order to be successful students. I will be putting a plan in place that will ensure that my middle school teachers are applying their knowledge of the developmental stages of middle childhood to their lesson plans because having knowledge of why middle school aged students act the way that they do will enable all teachers to be more effective in teaching and responding to our students. For example, I will encourage the need to implement student work groups within the classroom because middle school students need to experience group decision making, which will accommodate their need for affiliation and personal belonging to a small community. I am going to come up with a team that is responsible for devising a plan of action to restructure the school so that the behavioral, academic, attendance, high rates of suspension, and increased referrals to special education could be appropriately addressed and improved.
