Nursing professionals are held to high standards when caring for patients. To help ensure the optimal standard of care is maintained, employees receive evaluations regarding their job performance. For the registered nurse, evaluations are based on core competencies gained from nursing school, as well as additional competencies that are specific to the current area of work. By striving to be the best one can be, registered nurses (RN) must be willing to cultivate and expand their knowledge within the nursing profession. Once licensed to practice as a registered nurse, the nurse is deemed by the state to have met minimal competency standards (ANA A). Many facilities address these competencies when outlining the job description for a registered nurse. Gadsden Regional Medical Center clearly defines the RNs expectations for employment (GRMC). This writer’s last performance evaluation was performed by her departmental director behind closed doors. The director directly observes the care this writer provides daily, so the responses were a direct reflection of this writer’s performance. Due to the working relationship with this writer’s director, she was at complete ease during the performance evaluation. At the conclusion of the evaluation, this writer fully understood her supervisor’s evaluation of her performance.
