This is the case of patient ML, 64 years-old male from Philippines, married, admitted to hospital 11/14/11 due to eye pain, hypertension and headache. Admitted diagnosed: absolute glaucoma.

Pathophysiology
The American Optometric Association of United States, describe the glaucoma as a group of eye disorders leading to progressive damage to the optic nerve, and is characterized by loss of nerve tissue resulting in loss of vision. The most common form of glaucoma, primary open-angle glaucoma, is associated with an increase in the fluid pressure inside the eye. Advanced glaucoma may even cause blindness. It most often occurs in people over age 40, although a congenital or infantile form of glaucoma exists. People with a family history of glaucoma, African Americans over the age of 40, and Hispanics over the age of 60 are at an increased risk of developing glaucoma. The most common form of glaucoma, primary open-angle glaucoma, develops slowly and usually without any symptoms. A less common type of glaucoma, acute angle closure glaucoma, usually occurs abruptly due to a rapid increase of pressure in the eye. Its symptoms may include severe eye pain, nausea, and redness in the eye, seeing colored rings around lights, and blurred vision. Glaucoma cannot currently be prevented, but if diagnosed and treated early it can usually be controlled. Medication or surgery can slow or prevent further vision loss. However, vision already lost to glaucoma cannot be restored. That is why the American Optometric Association recommends an annual dilated eye examination for people at risk for glaucoma as a preventive eye care measure. He is cooperative but sometimes failed to respond immediately to questions due to discomfort. He appears weak and tired. Patient ML a 64 year old male has three siblings and he is the eldest among them. According to him, they have a family history of hypertension in both of his mother and father’s side. Apart from that, there are no other histories of diseases like asthma, cancer, tuberculosis, mental illness, and others in their family. Patient ML usually stays at home because of his condition. His usual activities are sleeping most of the time and sitting on his rocking chair while having conversations with his wife and other relatives. He also mentioned that he is fond of eating fatty foods and pork before, but at present he often eat vegetables and strictly follows the appropriate diet for him by limiting high caloric foods. The patient sleeps 7 hours at night and as mentioned earlier, he tends to sleep during daytime when he is not busy and when he feels sleepy. His blood pressure reading is 160/100; finger blood glucose is 200; A1C is 9. Lung sounds are clear, respirations 22 per minute; cardiac sounds no murmurs; pulse 90; bowel sounds are present; temp 98 F; skin normal. Patient can’t follow proper eye movement due to loss of vision and, there are swelling, redness and discharges in the eyes of the patient due to glaucoma; patient ML is obese due to lack of exercise.
