Introduction The nursing profession is an ever changing entity that requires constant modification as the world around us changes and evolves. Nurses and the profession itself is one of the oldest longstanding professions in the history of mankind. Through the hundreds and hundreds of years more advancements, both medically and sociological, have driven nurses to be better educated and better trained in order to face the evolving world that surrounds their profession (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2015). Nurses are also being pushed and trained to become better leaders, both in and out of their workplace, which the necessary training is being incorporated into their basic education, whether it be an Associate’s Degree or a baccalaureate degree. More hospitals across the United States are pushing for their nurses to be baccalaureate educated due to the increased patient outcomes and the benefits associated with the advanced education. A great debate is being waged on how to improve the nursing and medical fields through education, leadership, and through advancing or changing the practice itself. The most experienced nurses can be horrible leaders and the new graduate nurse one month removed from passing the NCLEX can have tremendous leadership qualities and abilities. Leadership skills are something that are not given to us when we are born, but something that can be learned and perfected over time. Leadership is important through all continuums in nursing from the delegation and follow up of tasks, interacting with families, interacting with different interdisciplinaries in every day practice. Being an excellent leader in nursing requires the right education and willpower to want to develop those skills to provide better care to patients and improve employee/employee relations and
