Professional Standards in nursing are general guidelines that provide a foundation as to how a nurse should act and what he or she should and should not do in their professional career. All standards in nursing are often established at the national level so that care will be the same regardless of the place of employment. However, states and local areas may also establish their own set of standards on top of what is already established nationwide. I chose to focus on leadership, one Professional Standard in Nursing. The nurse provides leadership in the professional practice setting and the profession. Criteria for measuring leadership are: the nurse is engaging on team work; working to create and maintain a healthy work environment; teaching others to succeed through mentoring; exhibiting creativity and flexibility during change; directing coordination of cares across settings and care givers; serving in key roles in the work setting by participating on committees, councils, and administrative; promoting advancement of the profession; displaying the ability to define a clear vision, the associated goals, and a plan to implement and measure progress; demonstrating energy, excitement, and passion for quality work; lastly, willingly accepting mistakes by self and others, thereby …show more content…
Nursing leadership is necessary for establishing a healthy work environment for all staff members’ part of the team. Establishing a strong leadership is particularly important at the point of care where most of the patient care is delivered by staff. These leadership skills need to be passed on to current and future nurses, so guidance and mentoring is a must. According to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, nursing leadership should always be available, these nursing leaders play a huge role in helping to give nurses a voice in the development of patient care
