As I progress toward a more advanced role in nursing, my focus has shifted from one that was primarily task oriented to one that is more analytical. I now have a greater understanding of how each individual service line plays an integral role in organizational operations. Collaborating with multiple stakeholders in order to achieve quality and excellence is consistent with Standard 10 and 11 of the American Nurses Association (ANA) Scope and Standards of Practice and will be necessary in addressing Ms. Smith's TAT concern (ANA, 2009). Furthermore, gathering and analyzing data as well as identifying trends are critical components of process improvement and essential responsibilities of nurse administrators (ANA, 2009). It is important for nurse leaders to have the hard fast facts readily accessible before they assume that a single service line or department is responsible for process inefficiencies. It would be premature for a nurse leader to request process changes to "expedite" room turnover without quantifiable data to support the request. In the study conducted by (Pellicone & Martocci) the perception was that the EMS staff was taking too long to turnover rooms but after further review they were found to be functioning quite efficiently (2006). Our data showed that the average cleaning time was only minutes above this threshold. This leads me to believe that either the data is skewed or there are other factors hindering the turnover of rooms at our facility. I was very excited about my contribution to Ms. Smith new quality improvement initiative and felt I had the skills and knowledge necessary to systematically analyze the data and identify
