Obama Security Breach

While the United States Secret Service exists to protect the nation’s leaders, there was a significant breach in security this week. As reported by POLITICO, a 42-year-old man, Omar J. Gonzalez, reportedly jumped the fence surrounding the White House and ran in through the North Portico doors before being apprehended by federal agents. According to the article, Gonzalez was not originally seized because he did not appear to be harmed, however, he possessed a small knife. The security threat was heightened due an unrelated arrest on the previous day, in response to a suspected bomb threat. This struggle can clearly be seen in the assassination of Henry III of France. While preparing to attack Paris in the suburb of Saint-Cloud, a Dominican friar asked to deliver documents to the king. The guards allowed him to pass, and as he stepped up to the king, he stabbed him in the stomach, eventually killing him. This situation could have very well been the same as with President Obama. This article, though not listed as an opinion piece, incorporates a few biases in both fact selection, as well as quote choice. The article mainly focused on the Secret Service’s response, as well as the protocol put in place. While these facts are relevant, the author left out a lot of information about Gonzalez, especially regarding a criminal record or mental health history. Additionally, the choices of quotes from this article indicate a clear bias, as the only opposing quote was that of a Republican.
