Obesity Epidemic On College Campuses

We often dread the freshmen 15 when entering college. Just wait until you gain the college 60. As college students we are faced with many obstacles. When I speak of issues I am pointing directly toward the things we encounter in our everyday college life. Such as, having problems with commuting to and from class, test anxiety, private study sessions with overworked upper classmen, as well as daily stress and stressors. The list goes on and on, but I believe the most relevant issue is the abhorrence for over-calories and under portioned campus food.

The article suggest “Most students are aware of the dreaded “Freshmen 15,” which usually starts small at around five to seven pounds and increases steadily during a student’s time in school. The weight gain can be caused by unhealthy eating, sleeping habits and lack of exercise.” (www.college.usatoday.com) Texas Women University students are more than likely to drive off campus or walk to local restaurants to purchase them something to eat. There is two reasons for this inconvenience. They either dislike the campus food or for the person who eats it occasionally are now tired of it. During a brief interview a student stated, “Not only are we tired of it but the food is overpriced” (College Senior at Local University). Students eating unhealthy foods can result in nutrition problems. Not all issues come from the unhealthy food. Sometimes students go days without eating because of financial reasoning’s or they do not want to partake in the over-calorie and under-portioned choices. As a student I notice my peers do more snacking than they partake is healthy meals. They snack all day and night even through study hours, creating malnutrition habits. If universities were to lower the prices of the food and invest in a healthier selection of food such as fresh vegetables and fruits the students are more than likely to purchase the items. Not only will they purchase the food but they will benefit from it as well. Universities dining halls don’t disregard to distribute healthful nutrition’s instead they just chose to offer students an all you can eat buffet style in which students are eating more than once, they get into the dining hall then go back for seconds after they think their first plate of food has digested . I have learned that Aramark is the campus food supplier and they have a large amount of fatty ingredients and are high in calories. With high fatty ingredients and high calories increases weight size, obesity, and a more stressful environment for cognitive functions. .Some of these issues do sometimes come from non- appealing healthy foods in which students wish not to eat.
