Michelle Obama’s goal as first lady was to make an impact on how kid eat and exercise. Her “Let’s Move” campaign has spread a healthy message throughout the nation. One of her first acts was to improve the lunches provided at schools. Public schools serve meals to approximately 31 million children across the U.S. according to CNN. Most of these lunches were high in empty calories and filled with unnecessary fats and sugars. Michelle changed this by decreasing portion sizes and trading in the standard meals for healthier alternatives. This was an uphill battle as many students started to take this to social media complaining about the new restrictions on food and the mandatory fruit and vegetable requirement; these complaints led to a few changes in how the meals were served, but still were healthier than the original meals. Many kids disliked the fruit or veggie that had to be put on their plate, but according to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans “the average U.S. child only eats ⅓ of the fruits and vegetables recommended.” This was one thing Michelle Obama wanted to change. There was a decrease in childhood obesity in kids ages 2-5 by 3.5% after the modifications were put in place. Her campaign may have some “haters” along the way, but she has made an impact that can change a kid’s eating habits for their lifetime. First Lady Michelle Obama’s
