Downtown, tourists can test their mettle by taking an elevator up to the 60th floor Observation Deck of the JPMorgan Chase Tower. Looking out over the city is completely free, but the view is priceless.

For a more relaxing day, visitors can drop by Boomtown, a quiet hipster coffee shop in the famous Houston Heights neighborhood.

Shop-a-holics should carve out a few days (or weeks) to spend time in the Galleria.
