The first part of the Odyssey tells the tale of how Odysseus’s cunning nature helped him escaped the Cyclops named Polyphemus. First, Odysseus tricks the cyclops into drinking a lot of wine. Odysseus does this because he wants to get Polyphemus drunk and asleep so that he may stab Polyphemus’ eye. Then, Odysseus tells the Cyclops his name is “Nohbody”. Odysseus does this because he knows there are more cyclops on the island than just Polyphemus and if Polyphemus cries out for help he will say, “Nobody hurt me,” or, “Nobody has escaped.” Finally, Odysseus’ plan comes together, and he escapes by tying himself and his men to the bottom of Polyphemus’ sheep.
