College is an experience where sometimes not every bit of knowledge gained is earned by sitting behind a desk while listening to a lecture. Office hours allow students to meet with their professors to get help with any material related to the course. To get extra help on course material, students have to effectively communicate what, where, and why the material is confusing. Office hours help students improve in many aspects such as academically, and communicatively.
I learned that going to a professor's office hours is beneficial. According to section w-3d of the Little Seagull Handbook, "We also need to get feedback from other readers." The specific time that I realized that talking to a reader to get a response is important in the revising process was when I was writing my definition essay on endurance and perseverance. I had never written a definition essay before so I did not know if I was going in the right direction. However, when I went to Professor Robbins' office hours, I asked where did I need to improve my essay and how. The advice I was given was to be more specific with my examples about the types of procedures I had endured and how I accommodate myself as a visually impaired artist that way my essay would be clearer. Office hours give students more opportunities to learn information that they do not understand by asking questions. Students can learn to effectively communicate what material is confusing them or express concerns related to the course by talking with their professor. Learning how to effectively communicate relates to a student's future because employers value it. Regardless of how intelligent a student is if they do not learn this critical skill it will affect them in the workplace.
