Equiano states, “as our manners are simple, our luxuries are few,” (Equiano, p. 34). Equiano accustomed to his own type of cultural until he was kidnapped and became a slave at an earlier age. Throughout each section of the book, he wrote about an experience he has survived. Equiano traveled through the country and was with several different masters. Each chieftain where different, some would brutally assault their slaves to work or they would treat the slaves with decency. Equiano stated, “I know learned” that after he left the estate of Musquito shore, “during which the slaves were well fed and comfortable,” (Equiano, p. 217). Equiano knew that some masters were pleasant, but when it comes down to arguing about slavery, then the abusive masters came out in his writing more.
