Anne Redd Professor Robertson English 2206–World Literature After 1660–Rough Draft of Final Paper 15 April 2024 Identity Quest Throughout The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano. Olaudah Equiano was a slave who was born in the Nigerian region. He wrote what is considered to be the first autobiography written by a freed slave. Most slaves did not have any education and therefore could not read or write. As a result, the people that were trusted to write things down would often change the narrative of what the slaves wanted them to write down to fit a story they wanted people to believe. Due to Equiano having an education and being able to write and read, he was able to write what he wanted to and give a first-hand account of what he experienced. She also mentions how he found his identity as the one and only creator of all things, he later used that passion to begin a plantation and began sharing the gospel to other people and helping them come to know Christ. Equiano also continues to tell of what Richard told him and says “He told me of a great man in the heavens called God. But here again I was to all intents and purposes at a loss to understand him: and the more so, when a little after I saw the air filled with it, in a heavy shower, which fell down on the same day. After this I went to church and having never been to such a place before, I was again amazed at seeing and hearing the service. I asked all I could about it: and they gave me to understand it was worshiping God, who made us and all things.” (Equiano, 96).
